LinkedIn is arguably the best place to network and find a job. However, if that’s the only place you hang out, you’re missing a major opportunity.

Real cybersecurity networking happens in other places like X (Twitter), Discord, Reddit, infosec.exchange, Mastodon, and online forums. Diversifying your online presence offers you the chance to see diverse perspectives, join niche communities, develop your skills, get real-time industry updates, and collaborate with other professionals.

No, you don’t have to be everywhere at once but consider extending your reach a bit. And remember, you’re not there to just scroll! Like, comment, and re-share content. Message people in your field of interest. That is how you get noticed and build relationships. More eye balls on you = more opportunity.

X is where the heartbeat of the infosec community. It’s the place where real time updates and news take place. If there’s a notable incident, breach, or interesting event, you’ll find the best commentary on X. Here are some big name profiles to follow and engage with:

Discord

Discord is an instant messaging and VoIP social platform. Users have the ability to communicate with voice calls, video calls, text messaging, media and files in private chats or as part of communities called "servers". This is a big hub for infosec people. There are tons of servers you could join - pick one or two that align with your specialty, interests, or personal preferences.

Reddit

Reddit is a social news website and forum where content is socially curated and promoted by site members through voting. The site name is a play on the words "I read it." This is a great place to jump into long-form conversations about a variety of topics.
